The Power of Sincere Recognition

An article published by McKinsey & Company, Motivating People: Getting beyond Money, November 2009, sited their Quarterly Survey results based on 1,047 executives, managers and employees around the world. More than 25% were corporate directors or CEOs. The motivator with the highest effectiveness rating was praise and commendation from the immediate manager (67%) followed by attention from leaders at (63%). Performance-based cash bonuses came in at (60%).

Why is the effectiveness rating so high for praise from the immediate manager? One likely reason is that the immediate manager knows exactly what the employee has accomplished. Their praise is sincere and specific, not arbitrary or superficial. There is real connection. Real meaning.

Employers would be well served to re-evaluate their reward and recognition programs. I am not asserting that financial rewards are not important, but I am saying that given the constraints of cash, nonfinancial incentives are capable of providing real value to employees and the enhancement of their relationship with work.

Recently, I had the pleasure of working with students from the University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business i3 project. The primary focus of our meetings has been the development of resumes and getting ready for interviews for the first ‘real’ job out of college.

One of my tips is the art of a good thank you note – a power thank you. A power thank you includes:

  1.  Articulating what the person did for you
  2.  Recognition of the effort that it took
  3.  Communicating what their action or actions personally means to you – the value it has provided

A thank you note is a form of recognition. The tenants of a power thank you are easily transferred to various employee recognition programs, ensuring that the recognition has real meaning to the employee and the rest of the company. Recognition of an employee’s accomplishments must be specific and connected to the goals and objectives of the company – the value their actions have provided to attaining the goals and objectives of the organization. That type of sincere recognition not only communicates to the employee. It also communicates the message to all employees – this is what matters, this is our goal.

Endnote

When Sherry Armstrong introduced me to their new product line, SendaPlaque.com I was impressed. Actually, that’s not true. I was more than impressed; an avalanche of possibilities went through my mind. SendaPlaque.com provides an extraordinary tool to personalize employee recognition. The adaptability to be specific and creative within a high-quality product is fantastic. The added feature of sending the plaque electronically is perfect of e-newsletters and intranets. Kudos to Sherry and her team. SendaPlaque.com is designed to reinforce the right kind of recognition.

Evolution of SendaPlaque.com

For almost twenty three years I have co-owned a brick and mortar business specializing in recognition products. Award & Sign, LLC serves businesses, schools and universities, and sports; among others. Our abundant showroom and catalog offerings provide thousands upon thousands of effective promotions and recognition ideas.

In 2008 we developed a unique line of perpetual (multi-plated) plaques called Honors Recognition Products. One of the lines, Plaque Magic, is the only do-it-yourself perpetual plaque on the market. It started out as a simple plaque, like the blue one below. But, as time passed, we developed more interesting graphics and started customizing the backgrounds, like The Jave Cafe.

We recognized the vividness in color and detail provided through the dye-sublimation process. We wanted to offer dye-sublimation to anyone wanting color in their awards. In addition, we could bring in any kind of image either as a graphic element or an entire background - pictures of buildings, people, food…anything! How fun!

Our team started dreaming about the opportunities. One suggestion led to another…and ultimately to SendaPlaque.com.

This was and is a “team” effort. Our collaborations have taken us from some pretty bad ideas to some darn good ones. If it weren’t for our team we would not have such a dynamic site. This team includes our in-house creative’s Alison Kauffman, Amy Gill and Song MoChon. We are forever grateful to our development team, Elevation Creation led by Daniel Montano. Jesse Wallace, the lead developer continues to be our “make it happen” guy. If it weren’t for Keith Hagen, our internet strategist from Brotaich, we would probably be headed down a way different path. Jeff Prager’s genius gave me insight how to create a living business plan. Many others have participated…thanks to all!!

Why SendaPlaque.com?

What in the world motivated us to develop SendaPlaque.com?

Quite frankly, it was the Denver Post. Like many of you, every morning I read the news as I eat my breakfast. For years I have been reading about the same stuff…just a different something every day. The local shooting, mayoral and senatorial candidates verbally pounding one another, and police departments blaming each other for errors made are typical headlines. Emotions are running high and self esteem low.

What if we could do our tiny part in changing the world’s consciousness? What if people started feeling better about themselves, and, as a result, were motivated to elevate others? What if, instead of destruction, we could offer a way to creation?

Certainly, SendaPlaque.com is not a cure-all, but it is a step to be looking for the good in others. It’s a start…it’s a movement to think positively, to direct our energy in an uplifting way. Even our mission statement reflects that: To raise the consciousness of all that is recognizably good in people. Take a moment to make a list of those that you could motivate, encourage and appreciate. Even your positive thoughts will be a great step towards societal improvement.

As for me…I think I will quit reading the newspaper.
